The pull down menus display the options available under that menu heading. Those options that have further selections will have a right arrow next to it. When you drag the mouse down to the desired option, the additional available selections are displayed to the right. To select one, drag the cursor to the right and down, then release the mouse button.
A checkmark to the left of a menu option indicates that the option is currently selected.
Menu options which have a Command key symbol, and a letter or number to the right of it, indicates that you can use that command key function to bypass having to select that option through the menu.
